For Assurity policyholders, estate planning comes down to one critical step: making sure the right beneficiaries are named on every policy. Insurance proceeds bypass probate entirely and go directly to whoever is listed—regardless of what a will says. When estate tax planning or controlled distributions are a factor, a trust can be named as beneficiary instead.
Assurity offers 11 policies, each with its own transfer rules. The sections below cover how to set up beneficiaries, fund a trust, and which products support each approach.
- Your policy number and personal identification
- Request a Beneficiary Designation form
Required Documents
- Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)
Special Requirements
- Trusts can be named as beneficiaries on life insurance products
- Percentage allocations must total 100% for each beneficiary tier
- Beneficiary designations override instructions in a will
- Only the policy owner can change beneficiary designations
- In community property states (AZ, CA, ID, LA, NM, NV, TX, WA, WI), spousal consent is required if the spouse is not the sole primary beneficiary
- A confirmation letter is sent once the beneficiary change is processed
- Children under 18 cannot receive benefits directly; name a custodian or trust instead
