Ally Invest offers 15 consumer investment accounts that interact with estate planning in distinct ways. Of those, 12 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. Understanding the transfer methods available for each account type helps families keep assets out of probate and ensure they pass to the right people.

Ally Invest lets account holders update beneficiary designations by mail, typically taking 15-20 minutes. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle brokerage accounts into a trust.

Ally Invest provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Trust brokerage accounts are opened on paper with the Ally Invest Trust Account Application package, which bundles the Investment Account Application, the Apex Clearing Certification of Trust and Investment Powers, and the Ally Invest Trustee Certification. All three must be signed by EVERY trustee — Ally Invest does not accept a single trustee acting alone at account opening, unlike Ally Bank. Attach the trust's title page, signature page, the pages showing trustee powers and what investments may be made for the trust, the successor trustee page, and every amendment. If the trust account will trade options or use margin, the trust or its certification must expressly authorize it. Submit by document upload, fax to 866-699-0563, or mail to Ally Invest Securities, PO Box 30248, Charlotte, NC 28230; account credentials arrive by email in 3-5 business days after acceptance. IRAs cannot be retitled to a trust — a trust can only be named as their beneficiary, and Ally Invest wants the trust document on file when it is.
