Transfer of accounts after death is not guaranteed under Slack Technologies, LLC (Salesforce)'s terms. Lifetime planning offers a more reliable way to manage and share accounts while the account is active.
How to protect your Slack accounts
5 lifetime planning steps for your Slack accounts:
Family sharing
Slack has no consumer family-sharing or pooling feature; it is an organizational tool. The closest analog to a transfer is the workspace Primary Owner transfer, where the single Primary Owner role moves to another member who is already part of the workspace and uses a company-domain email. Individual member accounts are not transferable between people; a workspace admin deactivates an account and provisions a new one for a replacement person.
Should you save your passwords for your family?
Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:
- Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
- It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
- Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).
Frequently asked questions
List every workspace you belong to and flag any where you are the Primary Owner, since that role controls billing and the workspace itself. For each one, name a second owner or admin on the company domain who could become Primary Owner and record their email so a transfer can be completed quickly. Confirm which export tier your plan supports for records worth keeping, and keep personal projects separate from company workspaces, because Slack only transfers ownership for workspaces created for a legal entity.
If a workspace holds records worth keeping, a Workspace Owner or Admin can export its data. Public-channel messages and file links export in JSON on any plan; broader exports covering private channels and direct messages are gated to Business+ (by application) and Enterprise Grid, and exports include links to files rather than the files themselves, with the Free plan limited to the last 90 days. Confirm which export tier your plan supports and who can run it, and export the material you want to keep before any account is closed, since deactivation retains data in the workspace but does not hand it to an individual.
Listing the Slack account in an estate inventory identifies it for a fiduciary, who works through the operator's official channels to manage or close it.
There is no beneficiary designation option for Slack. This account type does not support naming a recipient the way bank or investment accounts do.
