Shopify is an e-commerce platform for online stores and point-of-sale retail. It also sells domains, processes payments through Shopify Payments, and offers a money management account (Shopify Balance). A Shopify store is a business. After the owner dies, the storefront can keep taking orders that someone must fulfill or refund. The subscription, app charges, and domain renewals keep billing. The admin holds customer, order, and payout records, and Shopify Payments keeps sending payouts to the bank account on file. Nearly every account-level action, including ownership transfer, pausing, deactivation, and domain transfer out, is limited to the store owner.

When a Shopify account holder dies, their accounts may be transferred to a designated person at Shopify Inc.'s sole discretion. A transfer is not guaranteed, and satisfactory documentation is required before processing any request.

accounts can be transferred to another person while the Shopify account holder is alive.

What happens at death

Shopify publishes no deceased-owner process, form, or help article, and its Terms of Service (last updated August 1, 2026) contain no death provision. Each store has a single contracting "Store Owner": "Your Shopify Store can only be associated with one Store Owner" (Section 2.1). Only the store owner can change or transfer ownership, pause the store, or deactivate it, and Shopify Support will not deactivate a store for anyone. The Terms reserve a discretionary route for contested ownership: "Shopify reserves the right to determine, in our sole discretion, rightful Account ownership and transfer an Account to the rightful Store Owner," and Shopify may request documentation such as a business license or government-issued photo ID (Section 3.5). The Terms "will be binding upon and inure to the benefit of the parties to the Terms of Service and to their respective heirs, successors, permitted assigns and legal representatives," but "You will have no right to assign or otherwise transfer the Terms of Service, or any of your rights or obligations hereunder, to any third party without Shopify's prior written consent, to be given or withheld in Shopify's sole discretion" (Section 16.6). Shopify decides an estate's request individually, so the policy is classified as case-by-case.
