Estate planning as a Shopify account holder

Shopify is an e-commerce platform powering online stores, point-of-sale retail, domain registration, payment processing (Shopify Payments), and a financial account (Shopify Balance). A single Shopify account can hold an active storefront with live checkout, product inventory, customer data, order history, Shopify Payments balances with pending payouts, Shopify Balance funds, registered domains, installed apps with their own subscriptions, themes, and Shopify Flow automations.

When a Shopify account holder dies, their accounts may be transferred to a designated person at Shopify Inc.'s sole discretion. A transfer is not guaranteed, and satisfactory documentation is required before processing any request.

What happens at death

Shopify has no publicly documented bereavement or estate process. There is no dedicated form, help center article, or support path for deceased account holders. Community forum posts from families consistently report that the only path is contacting Shopify Support directly, where cases are handled ad hoc through secure channels. A critical friction point: contacting Shopify Support via help.shopify.com typically requires logging into the store account, which the surviving family may not be able to do. The Shopify Payments US Terms (Section D13 "Parties") state the agreement "binds you and your respective heirs, representatives, and permitted and approved successors (including those by merger and acquisition), or any permitted assigns," indicating the estate has a contractual claim. The main Terms of Service (last updated October 21, 2025) likewise state the Terms "will be binding upon and inure to the benefit of the parties to the Terms of Service and to their respective heirs, successors, permitted assigns and legal representatives," but no operational deceased-owner process is published. Merchant-side assignment is restricted: the Terms also state "You will have no right to assign or otherwise transfer the Terms of Service, or any of your rights or obligations hereunder, to any third party without Shopify's prior written consent, to be given or withheld in Shopify's sole discretion."
