Netflix, Inc.'s terms state that accounts are forfeited when the account holder dies. Lifetime planning is the only path to extracting value from the account before that happens.

How to protect your Netflix accounts

Ensure family members have their own Netflix profiles. Profile Transfer allows migrating individual profiles (with all viewing history and preferences) to new or existing accounts. This is the only continuity mechanism.

Remove PINs from profiles you want transferable. PIN-protected profiles cannot be transferred until the PIN is removed.

Note that you hold a Netflix account and which email it uses, so your executor or a family member can identify it. Netflix does not require formal documentation for cancellation if you have account access.

Use gift card balances promptly. Gift cards do not expire and are non-refundable, so any balance left on a closed account cannot be recovered as cash.

Family sharing

Netflix accounts are non-transferable. However, Netflix offers a Profile Transfer feature that migrates individual profiles to a new account, an existing account, or an Extra Member slot. Profile transfers include: name, icon, recommendations, viewing history (ratings, duration, device info, country, continue-watching), My List, game saves and handles, settings (language, subtitles, autoplay, maturity restrictions), test participation history, and stream quality preferences. Profile transfers do NOT include payment information. Restrictions: the source account must be active; Kids profiles cannot transfer; PIN-protected profiles must have the PIN removed before transferring; profiles with an attached profile email cannot transfer; Extra Member profiles cannot transfer; primary profiles cannot transfer to Extra Member slots. When transferring to a new or existing account the original profile is copied and remains on the source account (it can be deleted manually afterward); when transferring to an Extra Member slot the profile is moved and removed from the source account.

Should you save your passwords for your family?

Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:

  • Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
  • It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
  • Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).

It does not copy payment information. Kids profiles cannot transfer, and PIN-protected profiles must have the PIN removed first. Profiles with an attached profile email are also ineligible.

The account is non-transferable, so the practical plan is to make sure each family member has their own profile and, before the account closes, use Profile Transfer to copy each person's profile to their own new or existing account (which they pay for separately). Remove any PIN from profiles you want transferable, and record the account email and plan details where your executor can find them. Profile Transfer only works while the source account is active, so it should be done before cancellation.

Recording that a Netflix account exists, alongside other accounts, gives a fiduciary the information needed to reach the operator through its official process.

Netflix does not offer beneficiary designations, so there is no program-level mechanism for directing accounts to a specific person at death.
