A DoorDash Dasher is a delivery courier who earns money on the DoorDash platform as an independent contractor. Two separate things matter to an estate. The money is real: Dashers are paid weekly by Direct Deposit to a linked external bank account for deliveries completed Monday through Sunday of the prior week, can cash out daily through Fast Pay for a $1.99 fee, or can be paid instantly into a DoorDash Crimson account, a Demand Deposit Account issued by Starion Bank, Member FDIC. Because those are bank accounts, the money is claimed through the bank, not through DoorDash. What DoorDash itself holds is the record: monthly earnings statements, delivery history, and the Form 1099-NEC the estate needs to file the decedent's final tax return. The Dasher account is non-transferable, one per person, and the Dasher's ratings, completion rate, and Top Dasher status are tied to the individual and cannot be inherited.

DoorDash, Inc. reviews transfer requests for DoorDash Dasher earnings on a case-by-case basis after the account holder's death. Approval is at the company's sole discretion, and documentation requirements must be met before any transfer is considered.

What happens at death

DoorDash publishes no deceased-Dasher process, so what happens depends on which piece of the account is in question. The money is recoverable and is not DoorDash's to hold: earnings for completed deliveries are paid out weekly by Direct Deposit to the Dasher's own external bank account (transfers usually take 2 to 3 days and appear by Wednesday night), so most of it is already in the estate's reach through that bank. A balance held in a DoorDash Crimson account is claimed through the issuing bank, Starion Bank, Member FDIC, a North Dakota-chartered bank. The DoorDash Crimson Deposit Account Agreement provides that the Account must be held in the name of one individual only, that joint ownership is not permitted, and that the Account cannot be owned as Payable on Death (POD), Transfer on Death (TOD), In Trust For (ITF), or under a similar designation; that the accountholder's appointed person will notify the bank promptly on death or legal incapacity; that even with knowledge of a death the bank may pay or process transactions for up to ten days after the date of death unless ordered to stop payment by someone claiming interest in the Account; and that the bank may require additional documentation to confirm any such claim. If the Account is cancelled, closed, or terminated, the unused balance may be requested back by check to the mailing address of record, and a fee may apply. A separate clock runs on top of that: an Account with no customer-initiated activity for twelve consecutive months is dormant, and an account the bank cannot locate a holder for is deemed abandoned and escheated to the state as unclaimed property. Opening the Dasher app does not count as customer-initiated activity. The records side is the part DoorDash answers. Under the Independent Contractor Agreement, DoorDash reports payments on an IRS Form 1099 where the volume and type of payments qualifies, and issues a Form 1099-NEC to any Dasher who earned $600 or more between January 1 and December 31, available in the Dasher app by January 31. The Agreement provides that Tax Statements remain available for access and download only until October 15 of the year following the year the reported payment was made. Monthly earnings statements are downloadable in the Dasher app, and DoorDash directs any Dasher whose account has been deactivated to contact Support for both the statements and the 1099-NEC. The Dasher account itself is not an inheritable asset: it is limited to one per person, the Independent Contractor Agreement may not be assigned by either party without the other's written consent, and ratings, completion rate, acceptance rate, and Top Dasher status are tied to the individual. The legacy DasherDirect prepaid program ended April 1, 2025.

Frequently asked questions

No, and that is a verified absence rather than an assumption. The Dasher Independent Contractor Agreement, last updated July 17, 2026, contains no death-of-contractor provision: its only use of the word death is in an indemnity clause about personal injury, and it never mentions a deceased contractor or an estate. The Dasher Privacy Policy, last updated July 1, 2026, does not mention death or an estate either. The Dasher Help Center publishes no deceased-Dasher article. The practical consequence is that a written request to DoorDash Support is the process, and it is answered at DoorDash's discretion.
