WoodmenLife is a insurance company with 10 products relevant to estate planning. Life insurance and annuity proceeds transfer directly to named beneficiaries outside of probate, making beneficiary designations one of the most important estate planning steps for WoodmenLife policyholders.

Managing beneficiaries at WoodmenLife is straightforward—changes can be made online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-20 minutes to complete; processing time varies. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the policy beneficiary or establish an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT).

WoodmenLife has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

WoodmenLife (Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society) and Modern Woodmen of America are two separate and distinct fraternal benefit societies. WoodmenLife was founded in 1890 and is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Modern Woodmen of America was founded in 1883 and is headquartered in Rock Island, Illinois. They share historical roots in the fraternal movement but operate independently with their own products, membership, and organizational structure. Both issue certificates rather than policies.

WoodmenLife is a fraternal benefit society, not a traditional insurance company. Fraternal benefit societies are organized under a lodge system and provide insurance to their members. The insurance contracts issued by fraternal organizations are called certificates rather than policies. When you purchase a WoodmenLife certificate, you automatically become a member of the society, gaining access to fraternal benefits including community involvement activities, volunteer opportunities, and member-only programs at no additional cost.

WoodmenLife offers three categories of annuity certificates: Deferred Fixed Annuities (Freedom Series), available as a Single Premium Deferred Annuity (SPDA) or Flexible Premium Deferred Annuity (FPDA) with a guaranteed minimum interest rate; Variable Annuities, available through Woodmen Financial Services (WFS), offering investment options with potential for higher returns; and Single Premium Immediate Annuities (SPIA), which begin income payments shortly after purchase. Annuities are available in both qualified (IRA, 401k rollover) and non-qualified options. Interest rates are set monthly and will never be lower than the minimum guaranteed rate.

Log in to your member account at https://member.mywoodmen.org and navigate to the Forms tab. Fill out the Beneficiary Change Form, print it, obtain the required signature(s), and mail it to WoodmenLife at PO Box 35903, Cleveland, OH 44135-0903. You can also call Customer Service at 1-800-225-3108 to request a form by mail or contact your local sales representative for assistance. Only the certificate owner can change beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations override instructions in a will.

When you purchase a WoodmenLife certificate, you automatically become a member of the fraternal benefit society. Membership includes access to community involvement activities, volunteer opportunities, member-only programs, and local chapter events at no additional cost. WoodmenLife chapters and lodges host community service projects, youth activities, and patriotic events. These fraternal benefits are unique to fraternal benefit societies and are not available from traditional insurance companies.
