There are two ways to keep your UNFCU accounts out of probate: adding Payable on Death designations and retitling accounts into a trust. Because UNFCU is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Both methods ensure your accounts transfer directly to the people you choose, without court involvement.

UNFCU has 5 accounts with different estate transfer rules. Here is how beneficiary designations, trust ownership, and probate apply to each one.

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • Beneficiary (Payable on Death) designations are available on deposit accounts: checking, high-yield savings, and share certificate accounts
  • Up to five beneficiaries can be designated per account through Digital Banking; naming more than five, or naming a child/minor, requires contacting UNFCU directly
  • A trust can be named as beneficiary by providing the trust name, date founded, trustee, and contact information
  • Accounts already titled in a revocable living trust cannot carry a separate beneficiary designation
  • UNFCU does not accept beneficiary updates by phone or web chat
  • Beneficiaries have no access to the account during the owner's lifetime; funds pass to them at death outside probate
