Estate planning with Transamerica policies centers on beneficiary designations—the single most important step for ensuring life insurance proceeds and annuity benefits reach the intended recipients without probate involvement. Unlike bank or brokerage accounts, insurance products are not retitled into trusts; instead, trusts are named as beneficiaries when estate tax planning or controlled distributions are needed.

Transamerica has 14 product types, and the estate transfer rules differ across them. Some support beneficiary designations, some can be retitled into a trust, and others will require probate if nothing is set up. Each is covered below.

Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plan (401(k), 403(b), 457)Transamerica IRA
1
Log in to MyTransamerica and open Service Forms
  • Log in at https://myta.transamerica.com/public/service_forms.aspx (the service-forms library itself is behind the login)
  • Service Forms covers beneficiary updates, name changes, and bank-draft changes for individual life and annuity policies
  • Workplace retirement plan and IRA beneficiaries are NOT changed here — use the retirement account portal or call 800-755-5801 (plans) / 866-300-0028 (IRAs)
2
Submit the beneficiary change
  • Enter primary and contingent beneficiaries as percentages totaling 100% in each class (the form rejects dollar amounts)
  • For a trust, enter the trust exactly as the form's sample shows: "John Doe Revocable Trust, dated 01/01/1999"
Online Portal→

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • Percentages only — the form instructs that dollar amounts not be specified; primary beneficiaries total 100% and contingent beneficiaries independently total 100%
  • Trust beneficiary must be written with the complete trust name and the trust date (form sample: "John Doe Revocable Trust, dated 01/01/1999")
  • Trust-owned policy: trustee(s) must sign with their trustee title and a Trustee Certification Form must be on file or enclosed (plus a corporate resolution for a corporate trustee)
  • Naming a beneficiary "Irrevocable" locks the designation — that beneficiary must consent to and sign every later change, and may have to sign other policy changes and disbursements
  • A payment to a minor beneficiary is made to the legally appointed guardian of the estate or conservator unless state law allows otherwise — a trust or UTMA custodianship avoids that court step
  • Where a trust is named beneficiary, Transamerica states it is not responsible for how the trustee later disposes of the proceeds
  • Any beneficiary payment remains subject to the interest of a collateral assignee on the policy
  • Naming a funeral home as beneficiary: Transamerica warns the proceeds may exceed the funeral cost and the funeral home may not be obligated to refund the balance — a collateral assignment is the alternative
