There are two ways to keep your tastytrade investment accounts out of probate: adding beneficiary designations and retitling eligible accounts into a revocable living trust. Which approach works best depends on the account type and your overall estate plan.

tastytrade has 9 investment accounts with different estate transfer rules. Here is how beneficiary designations, trust ownership, and probate apply to each one.

1
Name IRA beneficiaries online (IRAs only):
  • Sign in at https://my.tastytrade.com
  • Go to My Profile > Beneficiaries
  • List one or more beneficiaries and set a percentage share for each
2
Brokerage (individual / joint WROS) accounts have no online beneficiary screen; a Transfer on Death Beneficiary Designation Form must be submitted by email or fax

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • TOD is only accepted on domestic individual accounts and domestic joint with rights of survivorship (WROS) accounts. Joint tenants in common (TIC) accounts and international accounts cannot submit a TOD form
  • TOD Beneficiary Designations are not available to residents in all jurisdictions, and TOD accounts are subject to receipt and acceptance by Apex Clearing Corporation
  • No TOD designation is effected until all required documentation is received and accepted by Apex; Apex reserves the right to refuse, accept, or renew the designation and may terminate it at any time
  • Spousal signature is required on the TOD form if the spouse and/or account holder reside in a community property or marital property state and the spouse is not an account holder or the sole primary beneficiary
  • The beneficiary designation cannot be revoked or changed by will, codicil, trust document, or other testamentary document -- changes require a new Transfer on Death Beneficiary Designation Form
  • Completed forms go to accounts@tastytrade.com or fax 312-724-7364; tastytrade does not process beneficiary changes over the phone
