Preparing your T. Rowe Price investment accounts for estate transfer involves two primary strategies: designating beneficiaries on individual accounts and, where supported, retitling accounts into a revocable living trust. Both approaches bypass probate, but they work differently depending on the account type.

With 10 product types, T. Rowe Price offers a range of transfer options. Some investment accounts support Transfer on Death (TOD) designations, others can be retitled into a trust, and some require probate if no beneficiary is designated. The sections below break down each step.

1
Log in and open the beneficiaries profile at https://www.troweprice.com/usis/my-accounts/profile/beneficiaries -- the T. Rowe Price forms page (https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/help/forms.html) routes both "Mutual fund beneficiaries - transfer on death" and "IRA beneficiary" to this online flow
2
Add or update the designation for the account type:
  • Taxable mutual fund and brokerage accounts: name or change Transfer on Death (TOD) beneficiaries
  • Traditional, Roth, and Rollover IRAs: name or change IRA beneficiaries (the IRA Beneficiary form states these three IRA types can be changed at troweprice.com)
  • SEP-IRA, SIMPLE IRA, Individual 401(k), and 403(b) accounts are handled by the Small Business team, not this flow -- call 1-800-492-7670
3
Provide each beneficiary name, date of birth, SSN, relationship (spouse or other), and percentage allocation totaling 100 percent
4
Review and confirm. T. Rowe Price also offers an online Trusted Contact designation at https://www.troweprice.com/usis/my-accounts/profile/trusted-contacts, which lets the firm reach a named person about your account if it cannot reach you

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • TOD registrations are made under the MARYLAND Uniform Transfer on Death Security Registration Act -- T. Rowe Price is Baltimore-based and registers TOD under Maryland law regardless of where the owner lives
  • TOD is only available for accounts owned by one individual or by joint owners with rights of survivorship
  • You may not name yourself or your estate as a TOD beneficiary, and an owner or joint owner of the account may not be listed as a beneficiary
  • You may not write estate distribution provisions into the TOD form -- beneficiaries are listed on a per capita basis unless you indicate otherwise
  • Beneficiary designations must be identical across all identically registered accounts, and they automatically apply to any identically registered account you open after signing the form
  • On the death of a joint owner, the TOD designation carries over to the surviving owner's account
  • Trusts, corporations, and other legal entities may be named as TOD beneficiaries
  • Failure to provide percentages, or percentages that do not total 100 percent, results in equal allocation
  • The form must be signed by all account owners
  • Only Roth, Rollover, and Traditional IRA beneficiary changes can be requested online; SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA go through the Small Business team at 1-800-492-7670
