Because STCU serves a limited number of states, procedures for trust funding and beneficiary changes may differ depending on your location. Verify availability before starting.
STCU allows existing deposit accounts (checking, savings, money market, certificates) to be retitled to a trust without closing and reopening the account. Visit any STCU branch with your Certification of Trust (or full trust agreement), valid government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust's Tax Identification Number or grantor Social Security number. IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust; designating the trust as IRA beneficiary is the appropriate strategy for IRAs.
Washington and Idaho are both community property states. IRA contributions made during marriage may be considered community property, meaning a spouse may have a legal interest in those assets. STCU may require spousal consent when designating a non-spouse primary IRA beneficiary. Consult a licensed attorney or tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
