STCU is a credit union offering 14 accounts that interact with estate planning in different ways. As a membership-based credit union, STCU operates approximately 50 branches throughout Eastern and Central Washington, North Idaho, and Eastern Oregon. Headquartered in Liberty Lake, WA. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in eligible counties in Washington, North Idaho (Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce, Shoshone), or Eastern Oregon (Baker, Crook, Gilliam, Grant, Harney, Hood River, Malheur, Morrow, Sherman, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, Wasco, Wheeler). Family members of eligible individuals can also join. Home equity products available on properties in WA, ID, and OR. Understanding how each account transfers at death—and which ones a trust can hold—helps families avoid probate delays and unintended outcomes.

Beneficiary designations at STCU can be managed in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes in branch; longer by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

STCU has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

STCU allows existing deposit accounts (checking, savings, money market, certificates) to be retitled to a trust without closing and reopening the account. Visit any STCU branch with your Certification of Trust (or full trust agreement), valid government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust's Tax Identification Number or grantor Social Security number. IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust; designating the trust as IRA beneficiary is the appropriate strategy for IRAs.

Washington and Idaho are both community property states. IRA contributions made during marriage may be considered community property, meaning a spouse may have a legal interest in those assets. STCU may require spousal consent when designating a non-spouse primary IRA beneficiary. Consult a licensed attorney or tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
