Estate planning at PenAir

How to protect 23 PenAir accounts — manage beneficiaries in-branch, fund a trust in-branch, and file death claims

Brand change

Pen Air Federal Credit Union converted to a Florida state charter effective October 1, 2022 and now operates as PenAir Credit Union. Same institution, same member accounts, no successor — only the charter and the name changed. Effective October 2022.

The procedures below reflect PenAir's accounts. Account servicing may transfer as the change takes effect.

PenAir is a credit union offering 23 accounts that interact with estate planning in different ways. As a membership-based credit union, PenAir serves Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington counties in Florida; Baldwin, Escambia, Houston, and Mobile counties in Alabama; and Montgomery County, Roanoke County, the City of Radford, the City of Roanoke, and the City of Salem in Virginia. Branch presence is 15 locations across Northwest Florida and Southeast Alabama; PenAir serves the southwest Virginia region (added through the May 1, 2025 Star City Federal Credit Union merger) through digital banking rather than branches, so a Virginia executor settles a PenAir account by phone, secure message, or mail. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in the eligible service area. A $5 minimum deposit in a Savings Account establishes membership. Understanding how each account transfers at death—and which ones a trust can hold—helps families avoid probate delays and unintended outcomes.

Beneficiary designations at PenAir can be managed in branch and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes by phone, in branch, or by video appointment. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

PenAir has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It is the same credit union and the same member accounts. Pen Air Federal Credit Union converted from a federal to a Florida state charter effective October 1, 2022 and dropped "Federal" from its name; the legal name is now PenAir Credit Union. Nothing about the change moved accounts to another institution, so an executor holding older paperwork, statements, or a beneficiary form in the name of "Pen Air Federal Credit Union" or "Pen Air FCU" is dealing with the same credit union at the same address: 1495 E. Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32514, 877-473-6247. PenAir has since been the acquirer in a merger of its own, absorbing Star City Federal Credit Union in Roanoke, Virginia effective May 1, 2025.

Personal Checking, Primary Savings, the Round It Account, the Christmas Club Account, the Money Market Account, and Certificates of Deposit can be opened or retitled in the name of a trust. High-Yield Checking cannot — PenAir explicitly excludes trust accounts (along with business and other special accounts) from High-Yield Checking eligibility, so a trust that wants checking uses Personal Checking. Health Savings Accounts and IRAs (Traditional and Roth) cannot be retitled to a trust either, though an IRA can name a trust as its beneficiary. Bring the trust agreement or a Certificate of Trust plus photo ID for every trustee; PenAir may require that document under Section 36 to confirm the trust exists and the trustee is authorized, but it is not a party to the trust and does not interpret it. There is no online trust-titling path — call 877-473-6247, visit a branch, or book a video appointment.
