Preparing your NinjaTrader investment accounts for estate transfer involves two primary strategies: designating beneficiaries on individual accounts and, where supported, retitling accounts into a revocable living trust. Both approaches bypass probate, but they work differently depending on the account type.

The transfer rules at NinjaTrader vary across 5 investment accounts. Below is a breakdown of beneficiary options, trust funding, and which products support each method.

Business Entity Account — TrustIndividual Account (Futures and Options on Futures)Joint AccountBusiness Entity Account — Corporate, LLC, or Partnership
1
You cannot retitle an existing NinjaTrader account into a trust. Account types cannot be converted, so a trust account is a new application. Register a new NinjaTrader username with a different email address from the one on the individual account.
2
Log in to the Account Dashboard and click Start Application. Select Business Entity as the account type, then select Trust as the business type (https://support.ninjatrader.com/s/article/NinjaTrader-Account-Types?language=en_US).
3
Complete the application in the trust's name and respond to the New Accounts team's document requests through Messages, or Settings > Documents, in the Dashboard. Expect requests drawn from NinjaTrader's business-entity list:
  • Employer Identification Number verification — IRS Notice CP 575 (the EIN assignment PDF) or IRS Letter 147C (photographed showing all four corners). Screenshots of the EIN from the IRS website are not accepted.
  • Verification of company financials — a bank statement in the entity's name
  • Government-issued photo ID for the trustee applying
  • Confirmation of who is authorized to trade the account
4
Allow 1-2 business days per uploaded document for the New Accounts team to review it. Handwritten signatures and verifiable digital signatures such as DocuSign are both accepted.
5
Fund the approved trust account from a bank account in the trust's name — NinjaTrader requires business-entity funds to come from an entity account, not a personal one. Then close out or transfer the balance from the old individual account.
6
If more than one trustee needs to trade, each needs their own subaccount; subaccount requests are reviewed by the New Accounts team and are not guaranteed.

Required Documents

  • Employer Identification Number verification for the trust — IRS Notice CP 575 or IRS Letter 147C (no screenshots)
  • Bank statement in the trust's name (verification of company financials)
  • Government-issued photo ID for the applying trustee
  • Confirmation of who is authorized to trade the account
  • A funding bank account titled in the trust's name

Special Requirements

  • A NinjaTrader trust account is a BUSINESS ENTITY account, not a retitled personal one — the practical consequences matter for a revocable living trust that has always run on the grantor's Social Security number. NinjaTrader's published business-entity document requests are built around EIN verification (IRS Notice CP 575 or Letter 147C), and business-entity funds must come from a bank account in the entity's name. A grantor who wants futures held in trust should expect to obtain an EIN for the trust and open a bank account in the trust's name before applying. NinjaTrader does not publish a trust-specific document list naming a trust agreement or certification of trust; the New Accounts team requests documents case by case, so call 1-800-496-1683 or open a support case first. NinjaTrader states it does not advise on which account type to select.
