How your Lake Trust accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, Lake Trust serves members across the state of Michigan. Headquartered at 4605 S Old US Hwy 23, Brighton, MI 48114. Multiple branch locations, video teller machines, and ATMs throughout Michigan. Participates in the Co-op Network for shared branch access at credit unions nationwide. With 17 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

Managing beneficiaries at Lake Trust is straightforward—changes can be made in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes in branch; 1-2 weeks by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Lake Trust provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Lake Trust members who create wills or trusts through the Lake Trust Legacy portal (estateplanning.laketrust.org) in partnership with Legal Karma can print their completed documents at home and bring them to any Lake Trust branch for free notarization. Documents are editable for 30 days after purchase. Legacy-specific support is available at 517-759-7143. Note that Lake Trust is not a law firm and the documents are produced by Legal Karma, not Lake Trust staff.

Trust-titled deposit accounts at Lake Trust qualify for NCUA insurance of up to $250,000 per qualifying beneficiary named in the trust. For example, a revocable trust with four beneficiaries could have up to $1,000,000 in covered deposits. Individual accounts with a POD beneficiary designation also receive $250,000 per beneficiary rather than the $250,000 per-depositor baseline. The exact coverage depends on the specific terms of the trust document. IRA and investment accounts held through LPL Financial are not NCUA insured.

Lake Trust accommodates both channels. A trustee can call 888-267-7200 to request the documentation package and submit a certified copy of the trust agreement or Certificate of Trust, trustee IDs, and the trust EIN (or grantor SSN for revocable trusts) by mail to 4605 S. Old US Highway 23, Brighton, MI 48114. In-branch retitling is also available and typically processes faster. IRAs held through LPL Financial cannot be retitled; only a beneficiary designation change is available for those accounts.
