With 16 products relevant to estate planning, Kansas City Life policyholders need to understand how beneficiary designations control where proceeds go. These designations override a will, so the names on file with Kansas City Life are what determine who receives the death benefit.

Managing beneficiaries at Kansas City Life is straightforward—changes can be made online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15 to 20 minutes to complete; recorded on the date the Home Office receives it in good order, with a confirmation letter mailed to the policyowner. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the policy beneficiary or establish an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT).

Kansas City Life has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Use the Change of Beneficiary form (Form 299SP) at https://www.kclife.com/_assets/pdf/customer/299SP.pdf, and give the complete trust name, the date of the trust, and the name(s) of the trustee(s). A copy of the trust document listing the trustees is helpful but is not required. Two things Kansas City Life will not accept: dollar amounts (it takes percentages only) and a primary designation with no contingent behind it -- it requires a contingent beneficiary for each primary so the proceeds still distribute if a primary predeceases the insured. Use a separate form for each insured. Submit it through the kclic.net secure portal, by email to customerservice@kclife.com, by fax to 816-931-3585, or by mail to P.O. Box 219272, Kansas City, MO 64121-9272. The change is recorded on the date it arrives in good order at the Home Office, and Kansas City Life mails the policyowner a confirmation letter -- if that letter never comes, the change did not take.
