Frequently asked questions

The finance company holds a lien on the financed vehicle's title until the loan is paid in full. The estate requests the payoff amount (online after logging in to the account, or by phone) and pays the balance from estate funds, life insurance, or the proceeds of a sale. Once the balance is satisfied, the finance company releases its lien and the title so the vehicle can be retitled to an heir or transferred to a buyer.

An heir who wants to keep a financed vehicle generally either pays off the loan and retitles the vehicle through the estate, or refinances the balance in their own name with a lender of their choice. Payments must be kept current in the meantime, because the vehicle secures the loan and can be repossessed if the account falls behind. Discuss the payoff amount and options with the servicing brand at 1-800-523-4030 (Hyundai) or 1-866-331-5632 (Kia).

If the estate does not intend to keep a financed vehicle, it can sell the vehicle and use the proceeds to pay the loan balance, or surrender the vehicle to the finance company. For a lease, the vehicle is returned through the lease-end process. Any remaining balance on a loan after a sale or surrender, or any remaining obligation on a lease, is a debt of the estate. The servicing brand's customer service can explain the current balance, the payoff amount, and the return or surrender process.
