Hanmi has 10 accounts, each with different rules for what happens when the account holder dies. Of those, 9 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. The right combination of beneficiary designations and trust ownership can keep the entire portfolio out of probate.

Account holders can update their beneficiary designations at Hanmi in branch, by mail, and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

Hanmi provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Hanmi operates in select states, so estate planning procedures may vary by location. Confirm availability in your state before initiating trust funding or account changes.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Visit a Hanmi branch with your trust agreement or Certification of Trust, government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust tax identification number (EIN) if applicable. A representative completes the retitling paperwork. Existing POD designations should be removed when you retitle to a trust, since the trust document then governs distribution. Branches can walk through this in English or Korean. A revocable living trust does not need its own EIN while you are alive -- the income is taxed to you. Note that IRA CDs and IRA Savings cannot be retitled into a trust; a trust can only be named as beneficiary of those.
