Greenlight does not currently support beneficiary designations, transfer-on-death registrations, or trust account titling on any account type. All Greenlight investment accounts pass through the estate at death and may require probate.

When an account holder dies, the executor or administrator will need to contact Greenlight with a death certificate and legal authority documents to claim account balances. The process and required documents are covered on the death claim page.

Beneficiary designations at Greenlight can be managed by phone. These designations take legal priority over a will, which is why reviewing them after marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child is so important.

1
Call Greenlight support at 888-483-2645 (24/7), or email support@greenlight.com — Greenlight is app-only, so there is no branch to visit and no beneficiary form to mail
2
Ask whether a TOD designation is available on the Alpaca-held Invest Account and whether any POD option exists on the Community Federal Savings Bank-held Card Account; as of this verification, Greenlight publishes neither
3
Because no designation is available, the estate path for Greenlight balances is the Primary Accountholder's will or intestacy, not a beneficiary form

Special Requirements

  • No POD designation on the Card Account or Savings (funds held by Community Federal Savings Bank as prepaid-card records)
  • No TOD designation published for the Invest Account held at Alpaca Securities, LLC
  • No joint ownership: every account sits under a single Primary Accountholder, and children and Supported Adults are cardholders, not owners
  • A child's "Investing for Kids" portfolio is owned by the parent, so naming a beneficiary on it is not possible and the child has no automatic claim to it
  • Anyone acting for a Supported Adult Cardholder must provide an official document (for example a financial power of attorney or guardianship order) verifying a legal, contractual, or court-ordered right to act

Greenlight has specific requirements to be aware of: No POD designation on the Card Account or Savings (funds held by Community Federal Savings Bank as prepaid-card records), No TOD designation published for the Invest Account held at Alpaca Securities, LLC, No joint ownership: every account sits under a single Primary Accountholder, and children and Supported Adults are cardholders, not owners, A child's "Investing for Kids" portfolio is owned by the parent, so naming a beneficiary on it is not possible and the child has no automatic claim to it, and Anyone acting for a Supported Adult Cardholder must provide an official document (for example a financial power of attorney or guardianship order) verifying a legal, contractual, or court-ordered right to act. These requirements may affect timing, so plan accordingly when updating multiple accounts.

The process typically takes Not applicable — no beneficiary designation exists to complete. Support responds by phone 24/7 or by email..

Why trust accounts are not available

Moving Greenlight accounts into a revocable living trust takes them out of probate entirely. Trust-owned accounts transfer to beneficiaries through the trust document, not through the courts. Greenlight processes trust retitling .

Greenlight Debit Card (Card Account)Greenlight SavingsSupported Adult Card Account (Family Shield)

Greenlight Debit Card (Card Account)

Greenlight Prepaid Mastercard issued by Community Federal Savings Bank; funds are held by the bank and FDIC-insured to the applicable limits. The Card Account is in the Primary Accountholder's (parent's) name; children hold Secondary Cards on it. No POD/beneficiary designation is available. Per the Cardholder Agreement (https://greenlight.com/cardholder), when Greenlight becomes aware of the Primary Accountholder's death the Primary Account and every associated Secondary and Supported Adult Account are closed, and unused balances are returned by refund to the Funding Account on file, by paper check to the Primary Accountholder at the mailing address on record, or to a verified law office after receipt of proper legal documentation. Greenlight reserves the right to keep any unused balance under $1.00 as a one-time fee.

Probate Required

Greenlight Savings

General Savings and Savings Goals balances held by Community Federal Savings Bank and FDIC-insured, inside the same Primary Accountholder Card Account relationship. Savings is a feature of the Card Account rather than a separately titled deposit account, so there is no POD or beneficiary designation and no joint titling. On the Primary Accountholder's death the balance is closed out with the Card Account and returned to the Funding Account, by check to the address of record, or to a verified law office with proper legal documentation.

Probate Required

Supported Adult Card Account (Family Shield)

Debit card for an older adult (up to two Supported Adults) on the Family Shield plan, managed by the Primary Accountholder, with fraud and suspicious-activity monitoring, identity-theft and deceptive-transfer-fraud coverage, credit and dark-web monitoring, and caregiver spending alerts (https://greenlight.com/family-shield). Estate consequences run in one direction only: the Supported Adult is a cardholder on the parent-side Primary Account, not an owner. Per the Cardholder Agreement, if a Supported Adult Cardholder dies, that Supported Adult Account is closed and the funds are transferred to the PRIMARY ACCOUNTHOLDER — they do not pass through the Supported Adult's estate, so this is not a place to hold an older relative's savings. The Cardholder Agreement also requires anyone acting on a Supported Adult Cardholder's behalf to give Greenlight a copy of an official document verifying a legal, contractual, or court-ordered right to act (for example a financial power of attorney or guardianship order).
