Greenlight offers 5 consumer investment accounts that interact with estate planning in distinct ways. Understanding the transfer methods available for each account type helps families keep assets out of probate and ensure they pass to the right people.
Beneficiary changes at Greenlight can be made by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.
Greenlight has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

View details →It is yours. The Greenlight Advisors Terms of Service state that "the Primary Accountholder (and not the Secondary Cardholder or child) will be the owner of the brokerage account established with Alpaca." The app tracks a separate portfolio for each child and asks you to approve each trade, but the account is a standard brokerage account in your name — not a UGMA/UTMA custodial account and not a 529. Nothing transfers to your child at the age of majority. For estate purposes it is your asset: if you die, the portfolio is liquidated and the proceeds go to your estate, and your will (or your state's intestacy law) decides who gets them. If you want the money legally owned by the child, open a UGMA/UTMA custodial account at a brokerage that offers one.
