Preparing your Granite State CU accounts for estate transfer involves two key steps: designating beneficiaries on each account and, where appropriate, retitling accounts into a trust. Because Granite State CU is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership bypass probate entirely.

The transfer rules at Granite State CU vary across 11 accounts. Below is a breakdown of beneficiary options, trust funding, and which products support each method.

1
Visit any Granite State Credit Union branch and request a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary designation form
2
Provide beneficiary information for each designee:
  • Full legal name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Phone number and/or email address (recommended)
  • Percentage allocation if naming multiple beneficiaries
3
Complete and submit the form:
  • All account holders must sign the form
  • Submit to a member service representative for processing

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • POD designation available for checking, savings, money market, and certificate accounts
  • IRAs use a separate beneficiary designation form; POD does not apply to IRAs
  • Trusts can be named as POD beneficiaries
  • Multiple beneficiaries permitted; equal shares unless otherwise designated
  • Beneficiaries are not given rights to an account unless all owners have passed away
  • Beneficiaries must be added to each account individually
  • Changes can be made at any time by contacting a branch or calling member services
  • POD accounts are NCUA-insured separately up to $250,000 per qualifying beneficiary
