Gemini does not currently support beneficiary designations, transfer-on-death registrations, or trust account titling on any account type. All Gemini accounts pass through the estate at death and may require probate.

When an account holder dies, the executor or administrator will need to contact Gemini with a death certificate and legal authority documents to claim account balances. The process and required documents are covered on the death claim page.

Required Documents

  • Trust agreement or certification of trust
  • Government-issued ID for all trustees and authorized signers
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN) for the trust
  • W-9 or W-8 form for the trust entity
  • Bank statement in the trust's name
  • Proof of address for the trust
  • Bank account in the trust's name for funding

Special Requirements

  • Trust accounts are opened as institutional accounts. Gemini operates as a fiduciary and qualified custodian under New York Banking Law, making it one of the few cryptocurrency platforms that can serve as a qualified custodian for trust assets. Deposits can only be accepted from a bank account in the name of the trust entity, which must match the business name on the Gemini account. Contact Gemini support or visit the institutional page for current onboarding requirements.
