Franklin Templeton has 9 investment accounts, each with different rules for what happens when the account holder dies. Of those, 8 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. The right combination of beneficiary designations and trust ownership can keep the entire portfolio out of probate.

Beneficiary designations at Franklin Templeton can be managed by mail and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes to complete forms; processing varies. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle brokerage accounts into a trust.

Franklin Templeton has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Non-retirement mutual fund accounts can be registered in a trust name. Complete the Account Application (GOF-APP), indicate "Trust" as the registration type, and include required trust documentation (title page, trustee designation page, and signature page of the trust agreement). IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust; trusts may only be named as IRA beneficiaries.

To change an existing non-retirement sole or joint account to a trust, complete the Non-Retirement Change of Ownership Form (GOF-NCO). Include the required trust documentation (title page, trustee designation page, and signature page). Mail the completed form to Franklin Templeton Investor Services, P.O. Box 33030, St. Petersburg, FL 33733-8030. This process is not available for IRA or other retirement plan accounts.

Completed forms and supporting documents can be submitted by email to SHrequests@franklintempleton.com (the email must match one on file and must not have changed in the last 15 days), by fax to 1-855-891-8377, or by mail to Franklin Templeton Investor Services, P.O. Box 33030, St. Petersburg, FL 33733-8030 (West Coast: P.O. Box 997152, Sacramento, CA 95899-7152). Signature guarantees or notarization are not required for fax submissions for standard beneficiary changes.

Yes. IRAs cannot be retitled to a trust, but a trust can be named as beneficiary using the Designation of Beneficiary Form (RRET-FBEN). When naming a trust, you must include copies of the trust agreement's title page, the page naming current trustees, and the signature page. For ERISA 403(b) custodial accounts requiring a notary stamp, the form must be mailed rather than emailed.
