How your Coastal CU accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, Coastal CU headquartered at 1000 Saint Albans Dr., Raleigh, NC. Operates 22 branch locations across central North Carolina including the Research Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), Cary, Apex, Carrboro, Garner, Holly Springs, Henderson, and Rocky Mount. Membership is open to employees of 1,800+ select employee groups, their immediate family members, and household members. Members can access accounts through 5,600+ shared branches nationwide via the CO-OP Shared Branch network and 30,000+ surcharge-free ATMs. With 15 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

Coastal CU lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Frequently asked questions

Coastal Wealth Management provides financial and retirement planning, investment advisory, insurance, and trust services. Securities and advisory services are offered through LPL Financial (member FINRA/SIPC). Trust services are available through Members Trust Company. A complimentary retirement planning session with a financial advisor is available to all members regardless of net worth or assets.

Coastal membership is open to employees of 1,800+ select employee groups (businesses, organizations, and associations that partner with Coastal), their immediate family members (spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, stepparent, stepchild, stepsibling, and adoptive relationships), and household members. Membership is free; a $25 deposit into a Primary Savings Account is required to join.

Go Green Checking earns up to 5.00% APY on balances up to $10,000 with qualifying debit card transactions each month. Balances above $10,000 earn 0.05% APY. The account has no monthly service fees and no minimum balance requirement. The Go Green Bundle pairs this checking account with a Money Market Account for an exclusive higher rate on savings. The Early Pay feature provides access to direct deposits up to two days early.

Yes. Coastal Credit Union allows deposit accounts (checking, savings, money market, and share certificates) to be opened in or retitled to the name of a revocable living trust. Visit a branch with your trust document or Certificate of Trust, trustee government-issued photo ID, and the trust EIN. All parties to the trust (settlors, beneficiaries, and trustees) must be within Coastal's field of membership. IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust but can name a trust as beneficiary.

Yes. A revocable living trust can be named as the beneficiary of a Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, or IRA Certificate at Coastal Credit Union. The IRA remains in the individual owner's name and cannot be retitled to the trust. Beneficiary designations are completed at the time of account opening and can be updated by submitting a new IRA beneficiary form at a branch or by mail.
