Canvas CU offers 29 accounts, each with its own rules for what happens when a member dies. As a membership-based credit union, Canvas CU headquartered at 9990 Park Meadows Dr., Lone Tree, CO 80124. Operates over 30 branch locations across Colorado including the Denver metro area, Front Range (Fort Collins to Pueblo), Colorado Springs, and the Western Slope (following the 2022 merger with Western Rockies Federal Credit Union). Members have access to approximately 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide through the CO-OP ATM network. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Colorado, immediate family members of current members, or anyone who joins the Consumers United Association ($5 annual fee). Some transfer automatically to a named beneficiary, others can be held in a trust, and a few may require probate if no plan is in place.

Canvas CU lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Canvas CU provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Canvas Credit Union membership is open to anyone who lives or works anywhere in Colorado. Membership is also available to immediate family members of existing Canvas members or anyone who joins the Consumers United Association ($5 annual fee). A $5 minimum deposit into a Personalized Savings Account is required to establish membership. Non-Colorado residents may qualify through specific criteria; contact Canvas at 303-691-2345 to verify eligibility.

Yes. Canvas supports retitling deposit accounts (checking, savings, money market, and share certificates) to a revocable living trust. Visit a branch or call (800) 437-7328 to initiate the process. You will need to provide a complete trust document or Certificate of Trust, government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust Employer Identification Number (EIN). Canvas retitles the account to trust ownership (e.g., "John Smith, Trustee of the Smith Family Trust dated MM/DD/YYYY"). Existing POD designations are removed when an account is retitled to a trust because trust terms control distribution. IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust but can name a trust as beneficiary.

Canvas offers conventional, FHA, VA, and 100% financing mortgage options including a zero-down-payment mortgage for Colorado properties. Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOC) are available with interest-only payment options and no closing costs on primary residences (one-to-four family dwellings in Colorado). The Garn-St. Germain Act generally prevents a lender from enforcing a due-on-sale clause when property is transferred to a revocable living trust where the borrower is a beneficiary.

Canvas offers four credit cards: the Canvas+ Rewards Credit Card (3 points per dollar on gas, groceries, and EV charging plus a Booster category, no annual fee, 14.49% APR), the Rams+ Rewards Credit Card (CSU co-branded rewards card with similar earning structure), the Canvas Select Mastercard (low-rate card at 10.49% APR with no annual fee and no rewards), and the Canvas Impact Secured Mastercard (secured card requiring a $500 CD deposit, 20.49% APR, $29 annual fee, for building or rebuilding credit).
