Brooklyn Coop is a credit union offering 9 accounts that interact with estate planning in different ways. As a membership-based credit union, Brooklyn Coop membership limited to individuals who live, work, worship, operate a business, or belong to a community organization in specific Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods: Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, East New York, Brownsville, and Ridgewood (Queens). Family members of existing members also qualify. Must be at least 14 years old for an individual account; children under 14 must be on an account with an adult. Branches: Bushwick (1308 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11221), Bed-Stuy (1368 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11216), and East New York (282 Chestnut St, Brooklyn, NY 11208). Understanding how each account transfers at death—and which ones a trust can hold—helps families avoid probate delays and unintended outcomes.

Brooklyn Coop handles beneficiary designations in branch. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

There are two sides to estate planning at Brooklyn Coop: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

Life insurance products are available through TruStage (CMFG Life Insurance Company). Credit cards are also available with instant issue at any branch.

Brooklyn Cooperative offers 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month share certificates with a $500 minimum deposit. As a credit union, these function like CDs but earn dividends instead of interest. Share certificates can have POD beneficiary designations and can be retitled to a trust. Early withdrawal penalties apply. Visit https://www.brooklyn.coop/cds-high-yield-savings/ for current rates.
