Bakkt does not currently support beneficiary designations, transfer-on-death registrations, or trust account titling on any account type. All Bakkt accounts pass through the estate at death and may require probate.

When an account holder dies, the executor or administrator will need to contact Bakkt with a death certificate and legal authority documents to claim account balances. The process and required documents are covered on the death claim page.

Bakkt does not currently support beneficiary designations (POD or TOD) on any account type. All accounts transfer through the estate at death and may require probate.

Why trust accounts are not available

Bakkt does not support retitling accounts into a trust, naming a trust as beneficiary, or any other probate-avoidance mechanism. Account balances transfer through the estate at death.

Crypto Trading API (B2B)

Crypto Trading API (B2B)

Bakkt provides institutional crypto trading infrastructure via APIs through its Bakkt Trade and Bakkt Markets products. Consumer accounts are held by Bakkt's partner platforms (e.g., Public.com, Nexo), not by Bakkt directly. Bakkt holds an NYDFS BitLicense and Money Transmitter Licenses to operate in all 50 states. Estate planning and death claims for crypto held through a Bakkt-powered partner must be handled through that partner platform, not through Bakkt. Bakkt discontinued its consumer-facing app in March 2023 and no longer maintains individual consumer accounts.
