Brand change

Acquired by Brookfield (now Brookfield Wealth Solutions Ltd.) on May 22, 2022 in an approximately $5.1 billion all-cash transaction. Existing policies remain in force and are serviced under the American National brand; the company stopped writing new life insurance in 2024 and now focuses on annuities and pension risk transfer. Effective May 2022.

The procedures below reflect American National's accounts. Account servicing may transfer as the change takes effect.

American National offers 15 insurance products that play a central role in estate planning. Because policy proceeds pass directly to named beneficiaries—bypassing probate entirely—keeping designations current is one of the highest-impact steps policyholders can take.

Beneficiary designations at American National can be managed by mail and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes to complete; 2-4 weeks for processing. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the policy beneficiary or establish an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT).

There are two sides to estate planning at American National: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

Frequently asked questions

American National is an indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of Brookfield Wealth Solutions Ltd. (formerly Brookfield Reinsurance Ltd., renamed 2024); Brookfield completed its approximately $5.1 billion all-cash acquisition of American National on May 22, 2022. The group operates through several subsidiaries: American National Insurance Company (ANICO) for annuities and (legacy) life insurance in all states except New York; American National Life Insurance Company of New York (ANICONY) for products sold in New York; American National Life Insurance Company of Texas (ANTEX); Garden State Life Insurance Company (GSL); and Standard Life and Accident Insurance Company for legacy health and disability products. Property and casualty business now operates under the Farm Family brand at FarmFamily.com.

The Palladium Multi-Year Guarantee Annuity (MYGA) requires a minimum single premium of $5,000. Deposits of $100,000 or more receive additional interest credited to the annuity value for the duration of the selected guarantee period. The Palladium MYGA is a single premium product, meaning no additional contributions are allowed after the initial purchase. It is available for purchase online at annuities.americannational.com or through a local agent.

Yes. Non-qualified annuities from American National can be owned by a trust. Use the Change of Ownership Form (available at americannational.com/home/find-a-form) to transfer ownership to the trust. You will need to provide the full legal trust name, date established, trust EIN, and trustee identification along with a Certificate of Trust or trust documentation. Be aware that transferring annuity ownership to a trust may result in a taxable event. Qualified annuities (those held in IRAs or employer plans) cannot be owned by a trust but can name a trust as beneficiary.

Both are single premium fixed indexed annuities launched in 2025 featuring a Best Entry Window that sets all selected index starting values at their lowest point in the initial 90-day period. Both offer conservative, moderate, and aggressive portfolio allocation options plus a custom allocation option with the same index choices. The Smart Start Accumulator Plus adds premium enhancement options that provide an immediate boost to the annuity value, which the standard Smart Start Accumulator does not include.

American National's property and casualty insurance products, including Farm & Ranch and Business insurance, have moved to the Farm Family brand. Information and services for these products are now available at FarmFamily.com. Farm Family Casualty Insurance Company merged into its affiliate Argonaut Insurance Company on October 1, 2025. Life insurance, annuities, health insurance, and pension risk transfer products remain under the American National brand at americannational.com.
