American Express offers 3 consumer accounts that interact with estate planning in distinct ways. Understanding the transfer methods available for each account type helps families keep assets out of probate and ensure they pass to the right people.
American Express lets account holders update beneficiary designations online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 10-15 minutes. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.
There are two sides to estate planning at American Express: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

View details →No. POD beneficiaries must be natural persons (individuals). Trusts, businesses, charities, and pets cannot be named as POD beneficiaries. However, you can re-title your account to a revocable living trust, which transfers ownership of the account to the trust directly.
Yes, but only to a revocable living trust, and only online. Log in and navigate to Account Services, then Beneficiaries and Re-titling. The trust must use the primary account owner's SSN, and the primary account owner must be a settlor/grantor of the trust. Irrevocable trusts and other trust types are not accepted. Existing POD beneficiary designations are automatically revoked upon re-titling.
American Express splits the account value equally among all named beneficiaries. You cannot specify different percentages or amounts for each beneficiary. Up to 6 beneficiaries can be named per account.
No. Once an American Express Savings account has been re-titled to a revocable living trust, the title cannot be changed back to an individual or joint account. Additionally, you cannot add POD beneficiaries after re-titling because the beneficiary provisions in the revocable living trust documents apply to the account.
You can submit documents in three ways: (1) Upload digitally by logging in to your account, selecting Account Services, then Upload Files to Document Center; (2) Fax to 1-800-542-0779; or (3) Mail to American Express National Bank, PO Box 30384, Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0384.
