America First is a credit union offering 21 accounts that interact with estate planning in different ways. As a membership-based credit union, America First operates 130+ locations across 6 western states. Headquartered in Riverdale, Utah. Expanded into NM (2022) and CA (2024, merger with 1st Valley CU). Membership eligibility varies by location. Understanding how each account transfers at death—and which ones a trust can hold—helps families avoid probate delays and unintended outcomes.

Beneficiary designations at America First can be managed in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes at branch; 1-2 weeks by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

America First provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Visit any America First branch, call 800-999-3961, or download AFCU Form #40 (POD Designation) from americafirst.com. Only the primary member signs to add or change a POD beneficiary, and signatures must be notarized unless witnessed by a credit union employee. You can name individuals or trusts as beneficiaries.

Yes. The POD Designation form (AFCU Form #40) does not apply to IRA, HSA, Coverdell Education Savings, or Trust Accounts. IRA beneficiaries must be designated on a separate form, AFCU Form #424. Contact a branch or call 800-999-3961 to request the appropriate IRA beneficiary form.

America First provides a full range of trust and estate planning services through Members Trust Company, a federal thrift regulated by the OCC. Services include trustee and executor appointments, estate plan development guidance, and coordination with estate planning attorneys. For members with smaller estates, America First also partners with Trust & Will to offer 20% off online estate plans.

Yes. You can nominate America First as your local executor and successor trustee by naming Members Trust Company, with offices at America First Credit Union, in your estate planning documents. Contact a Trust Officer at 800-999-3961 for a consultation.

Each POD beneficiary you name on your account provides additional NCUA insurance coverage of up to $250,000 per beneficiary. This means naming multiple beneficiaries can significantly increase the total insured amount on your account, which is especially important for larger balances.

America First offers investment services through CUSO Financial Services, LP (CFS), a registered broker-dealer (Member FINRA/SIPC) and SEC Registered Investment Advisor. CFS Financial Advisors can help with retirement planning, investment accounts, and trust services. Investment products are not NCUA insured and may involve risk of loss. Schedule a no-cost appointment by calling 800-999-3961.

IRA accounts (Traditional and Roth) cannot be retitled into a trust. Instead, you designate beneficiaries using AFCU Form #424, separate from the POD form used for deposit accounts. A trust can be named as an IRA beneficiary. IRA beneficiary designations override any will or trust provisions, so keeping them current is important.
