Discord Inc. accounts are forfeited when the account holder dies
Discord is a communication platform with 200M+ monthly active users, centered around servers (communities) with text, voice, and video channels. A Discord account holds server memberships, server ownership, direct messages, Nitro subscription, and developer bot applications. Discord has a dedicated help article for deceased users but offers only account deletion -- no memorialization, no account transfer, no data access for estates. Server ownership transfer is possible but only for servers with 100+ members and an owner inactive for 30+ days. Developer bot applications can only be transferred through the Developer Team mechanism.
Under Discord's terms, accounts are not property of the account holder and are forfeited when the account closes at death. No estate planning document—will, trust, or otherwise—can override this forfeiture.
Discord has a dedicated help article for deceased or incapacitated users. Family members can request account deletion by providing a death certificate photo and proof of the phone number tied to the account. Photos must be in color, high-quality, and show the complete document. Discord does NOT offer account transfer, memorialization, or data access for estates. Due to privacy and security reasons, Discord states it cannot provide access, disclose personal information, or share data tied to an account. Account deletion is permanent and typically takes about 15 days to process. Accounts inactive for 2+ years may be automatically scheduled for deletion with email/phone notification.
Under Discord Inc.'s policy, accounts have no value after death. Every strategy for preserving Discord accounts depends on steps taken while the account holder is alive.
7 steps for managing your Discord accounts during your lifetime:
Discord accounts are explicitly non-transferable. The TOS states: "You agree not to license, sell, lend, or transfer your account, Discord username, vanity URL, or other unique identifier without prior written approval." There is no family sharing, delegate access, or account succession mechanism. Discord servers can have multiple administrators, which provides continuity for the community but not for the owner's personal account. Developer Teams allow shared ownership of bot applications.
When someone dies
Accounts are forfeited under the official terms, 7-step process, and 2 required documents.
View details →Discord does not offer a beneficiary designation feature. Without this option, accounts cannot be assigned to a named recipient through the program's own settings.
When a Discord account is deleted, the username is replaced with a random string, but the messages themselves remain visible in servers and DM conversations. Recipients can still see the message content. The deleted user's DM thread may disappear from the other person's sidebar list, but if opened, the messages are still accessible. There is no way for an estate to delete individual messages after account deletion.
Discord automatically schedules accounts for deletion after 2+ years of inactivity. Before deletion, Discord sends a notification to the email address or phone number associated with the account. If no one responds, the account is permanently deleted along with all owned data.
