Beneficiary designations are the foundation of estate planning for Wilton Re policies. Unlike bank accounts, insurance products cannot be retitled into a trust. Instead, the beneficiary designation itself determines who receives the proceeds and how quickly they're paid. Naming a trust as beneficiary is an option when more control over distributions is needed.

Wilton Re has 7 policies with different estate transfer rules. Here is how beneficiary designations, trust ownership, and probate apply to each one.

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • The Beneficiary Change Request form revokes all prior beneficiary designations and payment methods -- all beneficiaries must be re-designated
  • Irrevocable beneficiaries cannot be changed without their written consent
  • The beneficiary change takes effect upon Wilton Re's filing of the signed and completed form, effective as of the date the policyholder signed the form
  • Until Wilton Re receives change instructions, they rely on the most recent instructions in their files and are not liable for payments made to the previously designated beneficiary
  • If multiple beneficiaries are named without written instructions about amounts, the death benefit is divided in equal shares
  • Trusts can be named as primary or contingent beneficiaries
  • Contact numbers and mailing addresses may vary depending on which legacy block a policy belongs to -- always check the most recent policy statement for the correct contact information
