Voya manages 19 retirement retirement accounts where beneficiary designations—not a will—control who inherits the balance. Because these are tax-advantaged accounts, the designation also determines the tax treatment for whoever receives them.

Voya lets account holders update beneficiary designations online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 5-10 minutes online; 15-20 minutes by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the beneficiary of retirement accounts.

Voya provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Reach Voya's Voya Claims Center at 1-888-238-4840 for help with any of these procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Log in to your account at my.voya.com and navigate to Personal Information, then Beneficiary Information. Select Add/Edit Beneficiary to designate primary and contingent beneficiaries. You can also call Customer Service at 800-584-6001 (Monday-Friday 8am-9pm ET) or complete a Beneficiary Designation Form by mail.

For ERISA-covered employer plans (such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans), if you are married and wish to name someone other than your spouse as primary beneficiary, your spouse must provide written consent. If you try to designate a non-spouse online, you will be directed to use the paper beneficiary designation form instead. IRA accounts generally do not require spousal consent, though state laws may vary.

Voya life insurance products are issued by ReliaStar Life Insurance Company (Minneapolis, MN) and ReliaStar Life Insurance Company of New York (Woodbury, NY). Annuity products are issued by Voya Retirement Insurance and Annuity Company. Product availability and provisions may vary by state. Individual life insurance policies were sold to Resolution Life Group Holdings in 2021; contact Resolution Life US at 1-877-886-5050 for individual policy service.
