U.S. Bank offers 18 consumer accounts that interact with estate planning in distinct ways. Of those, 15 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. Understanding the transfer methods available for each account type helps families keep assets out of probate and ensure they pass to the right people.

At U.S. Bank, beneficiary designations are managed in branch, by mail, and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

U.S. Bank has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

U.S. Bank does not support adding or changing beneficiary (POD) designations online. You must call 800-872-2657 or visit a branch to initiate the request. A banker will create a designation form and mail it to you for signature. After you sign and return the form by mail or fax (866-338-4251), allow 10 business days for processing. This applies to all deposit accounts including checking, savings, money market, and CDs.

Trust accounts at U.S. Bank must be opened in person at a branch; they cannot be opened online. Schedule an appointment and bring your trust document or Certificate of Trust, government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust tax identification number (EIN or SSN for revocable trusts). A banker will assist with the application and transfer or retitle funds from existing individual accounts. For investment accounts held through U.S. Bancorp Advisors, contact them separately at 800-888-4700. For institutional trustee services through U.S. Bank Wealth Management, call 844-872-4724.

IRAs at U.S. Bank are held through U.S. Bancorp Advisors and cannot be retitled to a revocable living trust during your lifetime, but a trust can be named as the IRA beneficiary. Use the IRA Beneficiary Designation / Spousal Consent form available at https://www.usbank.com/dam/en/documents/pdfs/wealth-management/usbi-ira-beneficiary-designation.pdf and provide the trust's full legal name, date established, and EIN. If your spouse is not the primary beneficiary for at least half of the IRA, written spousal consent is required. For help, call U.S. Bancorp Advisors at 800-888-4700.
