Thrivent is a insurance company with 8 products relevant to estate planning. Life insurance and annuity proceeds transfer directly to named beneficiaries outside of probate, making beneficiary designations one of the most important estate planning steps for Thrivent policyholders.

Managing beneficiaries at Thrivent is straightforward—changes can be made online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 10-15 minutes online; 15-20 minutes by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the policy beneficiary or establish an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT).

Thrivent provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Thrivent runs two separate service centers, and sending a form to the wrong one delays it. Insurance and annuity contracts use the Beneficiary Designation Common Form (307B), mailed to Thrivent, PO Box 8075, Appleton, WI 54912-8075, or faxed to 800-225-2264 -- or updated online at https://servicing.apps.thrivent.com/ by selecting the contract and choosing "Update beneficiaries." Thrivent Funds mutual fund accounts use the Thrivent Funds Beneficiary Designation Request (MF307), mailed to Thrivent Funds, PO Box 219348, Kansas City, MO 64121-9348, or faxed to 866-278-8363 -- and cannot be updated online. Brokerage accounts require your Thrivent financial advisor (800-847-4836). On the 307B, if you leave the coverage checkboxes blank, the designation applies to every coverage and rider on the listed contracts, which may not be what you intend when a child rider or spouse rider is attached.

Yes. Thrivent Trust Company is a wholly owned, federally chartered subsidiary of Thrivent, and it says it can serve in all 50 states as sole trustee, co-trustee, or successor trustee (including trustee of an irrevocable life insurance trust, a special needs trust, or a charitable trust), as executor or personal representative of an estate, and as guardian or conservator. Because it is federally chartered it serves the general public -- you do not have to be a Thrivent client. Two practical points: it will not draft your estate planning documents, but it publishes a preferred trust and will language memorandum for your attorney to incorporate and will review your plan against that memorandum at no charge; and it charges no fee until it is actually called upon to serve, with free safekeeping of any document naming it. To appoint it, have your attorney name Thrivent Trust Company in the will or trust and send a copy to Thrivent. Details at https://www.thrivent.com/product-overview/trust-services.
