How your Third Federal accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is titled and whether a beneficiary is on file. Of those, 8 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. Getting these details right keeps assets out of probate and ensures they reach the intended recipients.

Third Federal lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes by phone or in branch. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Third Federal has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

No. Third Federal states in its own FAQs that it offers trust accounts but that they "can only be opened in person at one of our branch locations" — and its branches are only in Ohio and Florida. There is no online, phone, or mail path. Bring the complete trust agreement with all amendments (or a certification of trust the bank may rely on), photo ID for every trustee, and the trust's tax ID. Interest Checking, Interest Savings, Online Savings Plus, Money Market Savings, and CDs can be retitled; IRAs cannot. If you hold an Online Savings Plus account or an online CD from outside Ohio and Florida, the in-person requirement effectively blocks retitling, so naming your trust as the POD beneficiary is the workable alternative. Note that Third Federal acts only as depository — it has no trust department and will not serve as your trustee.
