When a borrower at Tesla Finance dies, the loan does not simply disappear. The executor contacts Tesla Finance to establish authority, learn the payoff amount, and choose how to handle the balance under the servicer's procedures and applicable law.

Tesla Finance has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

No. Tesla offers its own financing only in certain eligible-delivery states; elsewhere customers finance through a third-party lender. The retail installment contract or lease agreement names the financier, and a copy is in the Documents section of the Tesla app / Tesla Account. If Tesla Finance LLC (loan) or Tesla Lease Trust (lease) is named, the estate settles with Tesla; if a bank or other lender is named, the estate settles with that lender.

Request the payoff from the financier. Payments and account servicing run through the Tesla app / Tesla Account, and some Tesla Finance loans are serviced through U.S. Bank, reachable at (800) 872-2657. A payoff quote is good for 10 days from the date of request and includes the principal balance plus finance charges through the request date, with a $75 minimum. There are no prepayment penalties. Once the balance is paid, Tesla Finance releases its lien and the title so the vehicle can be retitled or sold.

An heir who wants to keep a financed Tesla can pay off the loan and retitle the vehicle through the estate, or refinance the balance in their own name. Any financing is subject to the lender's credit and underwriting review. Payments must be kept current in the meantime, because the vehicle secures the loan and can be repossessed if the account falls behind.
