When a Maine Savings FCU member passes away, the Death Claims / Member Service Center handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Claims can be filed by phone (1-207-862-6500) or by emailing documentation to memberservicecenter@mainesavings.com. Before reaching out, gather the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate.

Death claim process

Follow these steps to file a death claim with Maine Savings FCU:

Filing a claim

1
Contact the Maine Savings Member Service Center at 800-273-6700 or visit any branch to report the death
2
Submit a certified death certificate
3
Claim process depends on account type:
  • POD accounts: surviving beneficiaries provide government-issued ID and certified death certificate to claim funds
  • Joint accounts with rights of survivorship: surviving owner(s) receive all account funds automatically upon presenting the death certificate
  • Accounts without POD or joint ownership: estate representative must provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court
  • IRA accounts: beneficiaries must complete IRA distribution paperwork at a branch or by calling 800-273-6700
  • Trust-owned accounts: successor trustee presents trust documents and death certificate
4
Federal benefit payments (Social Security, VA) received after the date of death are returned to the government

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate required)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under Maine law)
  • Trust agreement or Certificate of Trust (if trust-owned account, for successor trustee)
  • IRA beneficiary claim form (for retirement accounts)

Contact the Member Service Center at 800-273-6700 (Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM ET) or visit any branch to initiate the death claim process. Mail claims to PO Box 347, Hampden, ME 04444.

Processing timelines at Maine Savings FCU: POD beneficiaries and joint account holders can typically access funds upon providing death certificate and ID. Probate-dependent accounts depend on court timelines, which can take several months in Maine. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Documentation required by Maine Savings FCU includes Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if probate required), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary designations allow deposit accounts (checking, savings, money market, and certificates) to pass directly to named beneficiaries outside of probate at the owner's death. Beneficiaries provide a certified death certificate and government-issued ID to claim funds. Forms are completed in branch or provided by the Member Service Center at 800-273-6700. IRA beneficiary designations are handled separately.

Maine Savings FCU's Death Claims / Member Service Center can be reached by phone at 1-800-273-6700, email at memberservicecenter@mainesavings.com, and fax at 207-862-6502 for questions throughout the claims process.

If the deceased held multiple Maine Savings FCU accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Death Claims / Member Service Center can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
