HSA Bank is a HSA provider whose health savings accounts pass by beneficiary designation, not by will. Whether the balance keeps its tax advantages depends on who inherits it—a surviving spouse can treat it as their own HSA, while other beneficiaries receive taxable proceeds—so the designation on file matters a great deal.

Beneficiary designations at HSA Bank can be managed online and by mail. Trust funding options vary by account type—check with HSA Bank for specifics.

HSA Bank has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you are married. Step 3 of the HSA Designation of Beneficiary Form requires the spouse of a married accountholder to sign a consent paragraph before anyone other than the spouse can be named primary beneficiary, and that signature must be acknowledged before a notary public in the notary block at the bottom of the form. Both signatures also need a witness who is 18 or older and is not the spouse. HSA Bank also cannot process a designation without a valid Social Security number for each beneficiary. Note that a divorce, annulment, or other legal termination of the marriage automatically revokes a spouse beneficiary designation.
