When a Global CU member passes away, the Legacy Support handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Global CU provides an online portal for initiating death claims, which can simplify the initial notification and document submission process. Claims can also be started by phone or by mailing the required documents.

Death claim process

Here is the step-by-step death claim process at Global CU:

Filing a claim

1Contact Global Credit Union Legacy Support at LegacySupport@globalcu.org or call 800-525-9094
2Or visit any Global Credit Union branch
3A Legacy Support Specialist reviews the deceased member's accounts
4Specialist determines needed account changes, closures, and confirms beneficiaries
5Specialist identifies required legal documents based on your situation
6Submit required documents: certified death certificate, government-issued ID, and applicable legal documents
7For POD accounts: funds distributed directly to named beneficiaries upon verification
8For joint accounts with right of survivorship: surviving owner retains full ownership
9For estate accounts: personal representative must provide TIN for the estate, certified death certificate, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration
10For accounts without POD or joint ownership: estate documentation (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration) required
11Specialist provides account settlement summary

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (for accounts without POD or joint ownership)
  • Tax Identification Number (TIN) for the estate (if establishing an estate account)
  • Trust documents (if trust is named beneficiary)
  • Small estate affidavit (if applicable under state law)

Global Credit Union provides an Account Settlement Guide (downloadable PDF) that outlines the steps and documents needed when a member passes away. The guide covers joint accounts, POD accounts, trust accounts, IRA accounts, and estate accounts. The decedent must have been a member of Global at the time of death to establish an estate account. Credit union does not accept or interpret wills.

Processing timelines at Global CU: POD and joint accounts processed within days of document verification; non-POD accounts vary based on probate requirements and state law. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Global CU requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (for accounts without POD or joint ownership), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Visit any Global Credit Union branch or call 800-525-9094 to request a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary designation form. Provide each beneficiary's full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship. Specify percentage allocations for multiple beneficiaries. All account holders must sign the form.

A POD designation names beneficiaries who receive funds after the account holder's death without requiring a legal trust. A trust account is titled in the name of an existing legal trust, allowing trustees to manage assets during the grantor's lifetime. Both avoid probate for the designated accounts.

Contact Global Credit Union's Legacy Support team by emailing LegacySupport@globalcu.org or calling 800-525-9094. You can also visit any branch. A Legacy Support Specialist will review the deceased member's accounts, confirm beneficiaries, and guide you through required documents and settlement procedures. An Account Settlement Guide PDF is also available on globalcu.org.

At minimum, you will need a certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID for the claimant. Additional documents depend on account type and ownership: POD accounts require beneficiary verification; accounts without POD or joint ownership require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration; trust accounts require trust documentation.

Global CU's Legacy Support can be reached by phone at 1-800-525-9094 and email at LegacySupport@globalcu.org for questions throughout the claims process.

If the deceased held multiple Global CU accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Legacy Support can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
