When a Delta Community CU member passes away, the Delta Community Retirement & Investment Services (DCRIS) handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Gather the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any known account or policy numbers before contacting Delta Community CU. A certified death certificate is the primary document required to start any claim.

Death claim process

To file a claim after an account holder's death, here is what Delta Community CU requires:

Filing a claim

1
Report the death to Delta Community through any available channel:
  • Call the Deceased Accounts Department at 404-677-4659, option 3
  • Email DeptDeceased@DeltaCommunityCU.com
  • Call the general support line at (800) 544-3328
  • Visit any branch in person
2
Provide a certified copy of the death certificate along with all affected account numbers
3
The Deceased Accounts Department verifies whether the member had payment protection (Credit Life & Disability) and submits a claim if applicable
4
Delta Community reviews the account type and ownership structure to determine the distribution path:
  • Joint accounts: the surviving joint owner continues to use the account; to remove the deceased joint owner, submit a death certificate to the Account Transition Services Team
  • Single owner with POD: account is closed and funds are disbursed directly to the named beneficiaries
  • Single owner without POD: funds are distributed to the estate; executor provides Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration
5
IRS reporting continues under the deceased SSN until the account is closed; prompt action avoids complications
6
Joint funds or POD funds remaining in the account are NCUA insured for up to six months following the date of death

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary or claimant
  • All affected account numbers
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (when account has no POD designation and no joint owner)
  • Trust documents and trustee identification (when trust is named as beneficiary)
  • For IRA accounts: original documentation must be submitted by mail or presented in person

The Deceased Accounts Department (404-677-4659, option 3, DeptDeceased@DeltaCommunityCU.com) handles all death-related account matters. Estate documents may be submitted by fax (470-351-6550), mail (P.O. Box 20541, Atlanta, GA 30320-2541, ATTN: Deposit Services Account Transition Services Team), or in person at any branch. For IRA accounts, documentation must be originals sent by mail or presented in person. Delta Community advises updating personal estate planning documents (will, financial power of attorney, advanced medical directive, and named beneficiaries) after the loss of a spouse. Contact DCRIS at DCRIS@DeltaCommunityCU.com or 404-677-4890 (Monday-Friday 8 AM - 5 PM ET) for legacy planning.

How long the process takes at Delta Community CU: Joint accounts transfer immediately. POD accounts are typically processed within 2-4 weeks. Estate accounts requiring probate documentation may take 30-90 days. The most common reason for delays is missing or incomplete documentation, so submitting everything upfront is the best way to keep things moving.

Documentation required by Delta Community CU includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary or claimant, and All affected account numbers, along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Delta Community CU's Deceased Accounts Department can be reached by phone at 1-404-677-4659, email at DeptDeceased@DeltaCommunityCU.com, and fax at 1-470-351-6550 for questions throughout the claims process.

If the deceased held multiple Delta Community CU accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Delta Community Retirement & Investment Services (DCRIS) can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
