When a Delta Community CU member passes away, the Delta Community Retirement & Investment Services (DCRIS) handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.

Gather the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any known account or policy numbers before contacting Delta Community CU. A certified death certificate is the primary document required to start any claim.

Death claim process

To file a claim after an account holder's death, here is what Delta Community CU requires:

Filing a claim

1
Report the death to Delta Community through any available channel:
  • Call the Account Transition Department at 404-677-4659, option 3
  • Email Account.Transition@DeltaCommunityCU.com
  • Call the general support line at 800-544-3328
  • Mail to: Delta Community Credit Union, Attn: Account Transition Services, P.O. Box 20541, Atlanta, GA 30320-2541, or fax 470-351-6550
  • Visit any branch in person
2
Provide a certified copy of the death certificate along with all affected account numbers
3
The Deceased Accounts Department verifies whether the member had payment protection (Credit Life & Disability) and submits a claim if applicable
4
Delta Community reviews the account type and ownership structure to determine the distribution path:
  • Joint accounts: the surviving joint owner continues to use the account; to remove the deceased joint owner, submit a death certificate to the Account Transition Services Team (fax 470-351-6550; mail P.O. Box 20541, Atlanta, GA 30320-2541; or in person)
  • Single owner with POD: account is closed and funds are disbursed directly to the named beneficiaries
  • Single owner (including a CD) without POD and no joint owner: funds are disbursed to the deceased's estate or next-of-kin based on Georgia law, through a Georgia Small Estate Affidavit process where applicable, or against Letters Testamentary / Letters of Administration issued by the probate court
5
For an estate that must be administered, the executor/administrator can open a Delta Community Estate Account (a checking account with a companion savings account) to hold estate assets separately from personal funds:
  • The decedent must have been a primary Delta Community member in good standing at the time of passing
  • The decedent must have resided in any U.S. state except Louisiana
  • Provide a completed estate account application, government-issued photo ID for each executor/administrator, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, the death certificate, and proof of a Tax ID Number (EIN) obtained for the estate at irs.gov or 800-829-4933
  • Contact the Estate Specialists at 404-677-4100, option 2, or DeptTrust@DeltaCommunityCU.com to open the account
6
IRS reporting continues under the deceased SSN until the account is closed; prompt action avoids complications
7
Joint funds or POD funds remaining in the account are NCUA insured for up to six months following the date of death

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary or claimant
  • All affected account numbers
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (when an account has no POD designation and no joint owner), or a Georgia Small Estate Affidavit where applicable
  • Trust documents and trustee identification (when trust is named as beneficiary)
  • Completed estate account application and proof of an estate Tax ID Number / EIN (when opening a Delta Community Estate Account)
  • For IRA accounts: original documentation must be submitted by mail or presented in person

What to know at this institution

The Account Transition Department (404-677-4659, option 3; Account.Transition@DeltaCommunityCU.com) handles all death-related account matters per the Account Transition Service Guide. Estate documents may be submitted by fax (470-351-6550), mail (Delta Community Credit Union, Attn: Account Transition Services, P.O. Box 20541, Atlanta, GA 30320-2541), or in person at any branch. For an individual-owner account or CD with no POD beneficiary and no joint owner, the Service Guide states funds may be disbursed to the estate or next-of-kin based on Georgia law through a Small Estate Affidavit process where applicable; larger or contested estates instead require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court (the Service Guide points Georgia residents to the Council of Probate Court Judges of Georgia). Where an estate must be administered, an executor/administrator can open a Delta Community Estate Account (checking plus companion savings, $5 minimum savings balance) to hold estate assets separately from personal funds; it requires an estate account application, photo ID, Letters Testamentary/Administration, the death certificate, and proof of an estate EIN, and is available when the decedent was a primary member in good standing residing in any U.S. state except Louisiana. For deceased-member IRA matters, contact the IRA Team at 404-677-4600, option 2 (DeptIRA@DeltaCommunityCU.com); IRA documentation must be originals sent by mail or presented in person. For deceased-member trust or estate accounts, contact the Trust & Estate Specialists at 404-677-4100, option 2 (DeptTrust@DeltaCommunityCU.com). Delta Community advises updating personal estate planning documents (will, financial power of attorney, advanced medical directive, and named beneficiaries) after the loss of a spouse. Contact DCRIS at DCRIS@DeltaCommunityCU.com or 404-677-4890 (Monday-Friday 8 AM - 5 PM ET) for legacy planning.
