Creative Planning has 10 investment accounts, each with different rules for what happens when the account holder dies. Of those, 10 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. The right combination of beneficiary designations and trust ownership can keep the entire portfolio out of probate.

Creative Planning lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes with wealth manager. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle brokerage accounts into a trust.

Creative Planning has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Creative Planning is one of the largest independent registered investment advisors (RIAs) in the United States, with over $710 billion in combined assets under management or advisement (including affiliates) as of December 31, 2025. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, the firm provides comprehensive wealth management, financial planning, investment management, tax planning, estate planning, trust services, insurance, and retirement plan services. Creative Planning operates as a fiduciary, meaning it is required to act in clients' best interests. The minimum for financial planning and portfolio management services is $500,000 in U.S.-based investable assets.

Contact your Creative Planning wealth manager. Your wealth manager will provide the appropriate beneficiary designation or TOD form from the custodian (Charles Schwab or Fidelity) where your account is held. Complete the form with beneficiary names, dates of birth, SSNs, and allocation percentages, then return it to your wealth manager for submission. Creative Planning in-house attorneys can coordinate beneficiary designations with your overall estate plan. If you do not know your wealth manager, call client services at 866-909-5148.

Yes. Contact your Creative Planning wealth manager to initiate the retitling process. You will need to provide your trust agreement or Certificate of Trust and government-issued ID for all trustees. Your wealth manager completes the retitling forms through the custodian (Schwab or Fidelity). Creative Planning also has in-house estate planning attorneys who can draft trust documents if needed. Allow 1-3 weeks for processing.

Creative Planning Trust Company is a Nevada-domiciled retail trust company, licensed and supervised by the Nevada Financial Institutions Division under Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 669. It provides professional corporate trustee and trust administration services -- asset management, distributions to beneficiaries, tax return filing, fiduciary compliance, co-trustee arrangements, management of complex assets, and directed trust administration. Nevada domicile means no state income tax on trust-retained income and dynasty trusts lasting up to 365 years, available regardless of where the client lives.

Creative Planning does not maintain custody of client funds or securities. Client assets are held at qualified custodians, primarily Charles Schwab & Co. and Fidelity Investments. Your account statements come from these custodians. Creative Planning manages the investment strategy and financial planning, while the custodian holds and safeguards the underlying assets.

Yes. Creative Planning has in-house estate planning attorneys who draft custom trust and estate planning documents, and in-house CPAs who provide proactive tax planning and preparation. These services are integrated with your overall wealth management plan. Advanced strategies may include gifting techniques, charitable remainder trusts, family limited partnerships, multi-generational wealth transfer plans, and tax-loss harvesting.

Creative Planning works with households having a minimum of $500,000 in U.S.-based investable assets for financial planning and portfolio management services. The firm provides scalable, planning-led solutions that grow alongside your financial success. Contact Creative Planning at 833-416-4702 for new client inquiries.

Yes. While IRAs cannot be retitled to a trust, a trust can be named as the primary or contingent beneficiary of a Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Rollover IRA, or SEP IRA. Contact your Creative Planning wealth manager to update the beneficiary designation form from the custodian (Schwab or Fidelity). Creative Planning in-house attorneys can help ensure the trust is drafted to qualify as a "see-through" or "look-through" trust for required minimum distribution purposes.

Yes. Creative Planning provides 3(38) and 3(21) fiduciary advisory services for employer-sponsored 401(k) plans. Services include plan design, investment selection and monitoring, ERISA compliance consulting, and participant engagement and education. Creative Planning Retirement Services and SageView Advisory Group are among the top-ranked defined contribution advisory firms nationally.
