When a BECU member passes away, the BECU Trust Services (Members Trust Company) handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.
BECU provides an online portal for initiating death claims, which can simplify the initial notification and document submission process. Claims can also be started by phone or by mailing the required documents.
Here is the step-by-step death claim process at BECU:
For mortgage accounts, contact BECU Mortgage department at 877-747-2328. Use the Request to Remove Decedent from Mortgage form (Form 2095) for mortgage changes. For loan loss management, call 206-439-5787. The Successor in Interest Packet (Form P-1250) is available for mortgage assumption. Credit card authorized users must destroy or return cards and cannot continue use after cardholder death. Government deposits made in the decedent's name after date of death are automatically returned. Interest continues reporting under decedent's SSN until accounts are closed. The Deceased Member Documentation Request form (Form 2094) is available for requesting account documentation. Authorization to Release Information forms are available for attorneys (Form 15245) and legal representatives of the estate (Form 15246).
Processing timelines at BECU: Allow 3 or more weeks for account research to be completed. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.
BECU requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if personal representative), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.
Notify BECU by calling 800-233-2328 or visiting any branch. Provide a certified death certificate. Allow 3 or more weeks for account research. Close accounts under the deceased member's SSN as soon as possible to limit IRS reporting complications. For mortgage accounts, contact BECU Mortgage at 877-747-2328.
As a Payable on Death beneficiary, you need a certified death certificate, government-issued photo ID, and the appropriate Beneficiary Request to Claim Funds form: Adult (Form 342), Minor (Form 341), or Organization (Form 343). For IRA beneficiaries, use the IRA Beneficiary Disbursement Election form (Form 2100). All forms are available at becu.org/support/forms or at any BECU branch.
Surviving joint account holders with right of survivorship retain access to funds and may continue using debit cards and checks. BECU recommends closing accounts held under the deceased member's Social Security number as soon as possible and opening new accounts under the survivor's name to avoid complications with year-end IRS reporting.
BECU's Account Servicing can be reached by phone at 1-800-233-2328 for questions throughout the claims process.
If the deceased held multiple BECU accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The BECU Trust Services (Members Trust Company) can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
