Bank of Hawaii has 17 accounts, each with different rules for what happens when the account holder dies. Of those, 15 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. The right combination of beneficiary designations and trust ownership can keep the entire portfolio out of probate.

Managing beneficiaries at Bank of Hawaii is straightforward—changes can be made in branch and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes in branch. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Bank of Hawaii provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Trust administration, estate planning, and legacy planning are offered through The Private Bank at Bank of Hawaii, not the retail branch network. The Private Bank assigns a dedicated relationship manager and is reached at 808-643-3888 (toll-free 1-888-643-3888) or through the contact form at https://www.boh.com/wealth/the-private-bank/contact-us. This is a separate service from Bankoh Advisors, which handles brokerage and insurance products.

Bank of Hawaii does not offer online trust retitling or publish a consumer trust-certification form. Retitling a checking, savings, or CD account to a revocable trust requires an in-branch visit with the full trust agreement or a Certification of Trust (preferred for privacy) and government-issued photo ID for each trustee. Any existing POD designation must be removed before the account is retitled to the trust, since trust-held accounts generally do not carry POD beneficiaries. Investment accounts held through Bankoh Advisors are retitled separately by calling (808) 694-8500.
