Most states do not require you to register or file your revocable living trust with any government agency when you create it. The trust becomes effective immediately upon signing and notarization (where required). However, you may need to obtain a tax identification number (EIN) from the IRS if the trust will hold assets or generate income. Some states have specific recording requirements only if the trust owns real estate, but the trust document itself typically remains private.
