What expenses can an executor get reimbursed for from the estate?

Executors can typically be reimbursed for out-of-pocket costs they pay while administering an estate, including funeral and burial expenses, court filing fees, postage, travel costs related to estate duties, and fees paid to accountants or appraisers. These reimbursements come directly from estate assets before distributions are made to beneficiaries. Keeping detailed records and receipts for every expense is important, since beneficiaries or the probate court may request documentation. Executor compensation itself is a separate matter from reimbursement — many states set statutory fee schedules for that, while reimbursable expenses are generally treated as estate debts.
