You can update your estate plan immediately after filing for divorce, though some changes may be automatically triggered by state law. Many states have statutes that automatically revoke provisions benefiting a former spouse in wills and other documents once the divorce is finalized. However, waiting for automatic changes isn't recommended since they don't cover all situations. It's particularly important to update beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and life insurance policies right away, as these often aren't covered by automatic revocation laws and could still pass to your ex-spouse.
