Member Services - Death Claims

When a Congressional FCU member passes away, the Member Services - Death Claims handles the transition of accounts to beneficiaries or the estate. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership transfer outside of probate, while solely-owned accounts may require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court.
Gather the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any known account or policy numbers before contacting Congressional FCU. A certified death certificate is the primary document required to start any claim.
Here is the step-by-step death claim process at Congressional FCU:
Congressional FCU is federally insured by NCUA. Joint and POD funds remain NCUA insured for up to six months following the date of death.
Processing timelines at Congressional FCU: Joint accounts transfer immediately. POD accounts are typically processed within 2-4 weeks. Estate accounts requiring probate documentation may take 30-90 days.. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.
Congressional FCU requires Certified copy of the death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary or claimant, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (when account has no POD or beneficiary designation and no joint owner), and Trust documents and trustee identification (when trust is named as beneficiary) to process a death claim. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.
The outcome depends on account ownership and designations. Joint accounts with right of survivorship pass to the surviving owner. Accounts with a POD designation are closed and funds disbursed to surviving named beneficiaries (primary beneficiaries first; contingent beneficiaries receive funds only if no primary beneficiary survives). Accounts without a POD and without a joint owner are distributed to the estate through probate. IRA accounts pass to named IRA beneficiaries. NCUA insurance coverage on joint and POD funds continues for up to six months after the date of death.
A certified copy of the death certificate is required in all cases. Each beneficiary or claimant must provide government-issued photo ID. If the account has no POD designation and no joint owner, the estate representative must provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration. If a trust is named as beneficiary, trust documents and trustee identification are needed. Contact Member Services at (703) 934-8300 or (800) 491-2328 to begin the process.
Congressional FCU's Member Services - Death Claims can be reached by phone at (800) 491-2328, email at Email@CongressionalFCU.org, and fax at (703) 934-8307 for questions throughout the claims process.
If the deceased held multiple Congressional FCU accounts, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Member Services - Death Claims can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
