Filing a death claim on a VALIC policy begins with notifying the Death Claims at 1-800-448-2542. Life insurance claims are separate from probate—proceeds transfer directly to named beneficiaries regardless of whether the estate goes through court. The timeline and documentation requirements depend on the policy type and cause of death.
Gather the account holder's full name, date of birth, and any known account or policy numbers before contacting VALIC. A certified death certificate is the primary document required to start any claim.
Here is the step-by-step death claim process at VALIC:
If the total benefit amount is greater than $15,000, a claims packet is sent to all beneficiaries within 5 business days of notification. Each beneficiary must submit a separate claim form. Original certified death certificate required by mail for cumulative values over $50,000.
Processing timelines at VALIC: 5 business days after all requirements received in good order. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.
VALIC requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate (original certified copy if cumulative value exceeds $50,000), Government-issued ID for each beneficiary, and Completed Death Claim Form (VL 995) for each beneficiary, and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.
Upon death of the contract holder, the beneficiary receives the greater of either the current account value or the Guaranteed Minimum Death Benefit (GMDB). The specific GMDB calculation varies by product and contract terms.
Report the death online at corebridgefinancial.com/support/report-death-claim or call 1-800-448-2542. Corebridge will mail a claims packet to all beneficiaries within 5 business days of notification. Each beneficiary must complete a separate Death Claim Form (VL 995). Claims are processed within 5 business days once all requirements are received in good order.
VALIC pays claims only to a custodian or through an alternative guardianship arrangement for minor beneficiaries. When naming a minor, designate a custodian under your state Uniform Transfers (Gifts) To Minors Act using form VL 14945-2 (Additional Beneficiary Custodian for Minor Sheet).
VALIC's Death Claims can be reached by phone at 1-800-448-2542 and fax at 1-877-202-0187 for questions throughout the claims process.
If the deceased held multiple VALIC policies, each may require a separate claim or have different documentation requirements. The Death Claims can confirm which accounts require individual attention and which can be processed together.
